What Is a 360 Photo Booth, Anyway?

I've planned enough parties to know that finding something people actually want to do is hard.

The bounce house years were easy. But adults and older kids want something fun, not embarrassing, and ideally doesn't require you to organize 14 different activities.

Whether you're planning a graduation, a holiday party, or a big family celebration, there's always that question: What are people actually going to do?

That's part of what drew me to 360 photo booths. But when I first started looking into them, I realized something: Not everyone actually knows what they are.

And the name doesn't help much. It's called a photo booth, but it doesn't actually take photos.

So let's start there.

First, What Exactly Is a 360 Photo Booth?

You've probably seen the videos on social media. A group of friends stands on a platform, a camera spins around them, and suddenly they're starring in their own little music video.

That's a 360 photo booth.

Instead of taking still pictures, it captures short videos using a camera that rotates around you. The footage can be transformed with slow motion, music, and special effects.

Here's how it works:

  1. You step onto a circular platform, alone or with friends.

  2. A camera rotates around the platform while you pose, dance, or just have fun.

  3. Software turns the footage into a short video with effects and music.

  4. You get a digital video you can save and share.

The whole thing takes just a few moments.

And unlike some party activities, there's really nothing to learn. You just step on, have fun, and let the camera do its thing.

But Do People Actually Like Doing This?

This was one of my biggest questions when we started Spinfinity.

Because as a mom, I know there's a difference between an activity that looks fun on Pinterest and one that people actually participate in.

The nice thing about a 360 booth is that it's not a structured activity. Nobody has to stop the party, gather everyone around, or explain complicated rules.

People can hop on with their friends, try something ridiculous, and then get right back to the party.

And if you're worried about guests who aren't exactly comfortable being the center of attention, they don't have to do it alone. Sometimes the best videos are just a group of friends laughing because nobody knows what to do with their hands.

So, Is It Different From a Regular Photo Booth?

Yes, and the distinction is actually pretty important.

A traditional photo booth takes still photos, often with props and a backdrop. You might get a printed strip of pictures to take home.

A 360 photo booth captures movement.

Think slow-motion hair flips, dramatic poses, confetti tosses, and groups of friends trying to coordinate something that inevitably goes a little sideways.

Both are fun. But they create very different keepsakes.

If you want printed photos for the refrigerator, a traditional booth might be your thing.

If you want videos people can save, share, and laugh about afterward, that's where a 360 booth comes in.
