15 Tween & Teen Birthday Party Ideas

I’ve planned a lot of birthday parties over the years and attended even more. Along the way, I’ve collected plenty of ideas that worked, plus a few I immediately filed away for later.

So if you’re planning a tween or teen birthday at home, here are 15 ideas worth stealing.

1. Host an Outdoor Movie Night

This was one of our favorites. We set up a big screen outside, added blankets and turned our patio into a concession stand.

My biggest takeaway: the little extras made it feel like more than just watching a movie outside. Popcorn, blankets, fun drinks and a concession setup turned it into an event.

2. Add a 360 Photo Booth

Full disclosure: I own a 360 photo booth company, so I’m slightly biased on this one.

But I’ve also seen firsthand how much fun it is when friends pile onto the platform, grab props, make a video and immediately want to do another one.

3. Set Up a Dirty Soda or Dirty Lemonade Bar

We did a dirty lemonade bar and it was ridiculously easy for how cute it turned out.

Put out lemonade or sodas, flavored syrups, pumps, cups and toppings and let everyone create their own combinations.

It doubles as the drinks and something to do, which is a party-planning win.

4. Create a Bedazzling Bar

Set out a bedazzling kit and a few things to decorate, then leave it there for the night.

No scheduled craft time required. Everyone can wander over and work on something whenever they feel like it.

We’ve done this, and I’d absolutely do it again.

5. Play “Who Knows the Birthday Kid Best?”

I made a “Who Knows Ryka Best?” quiz with questions about her favorite things, hobbies and random facts.

It was easy to make, personal and surprisingly competitive.

And the questions don’t need to be profound. Favorite Starbucks order absolutely counts.

6. Have a Sleepover

Sometimes the party is the sleepover.

Add one main activity, order food, stock up on snacks and let the rest of the night happen.

I’ve learned there’s no need to plan every hour. They’ll take care of a good portion of the entertainment themselves.

7. Set Up Karaoke

You don’t necessarily need a full karaoke setup. A microphone, speaker and TV can get the job done.

Let the birthday kid help build the playlist beforehand, then turn over the microphone.

8. Make a DIY Photo Spot

Pick one area of the house or backyard and give it a little attention with a backdrop, balloons, lights or props.

It doesn’t have to be elaborate. It just gives everyone a good place for group pictures that isn’t your kitchen counter.

9. Try a Photo or Video Challenge

Make a quick list of challenges: best group pose, funniest slow-mo, most dramatic entrance, best dance move.

Leave the list out and let everyone tackle as many or as few as they want.

This is also really fun paired with a 360 booth.

10. Do a Build-Your-Own Food Bar

Tacos. Nachos. Pizza. Ice cream. Popcorn.

Pick something everyone can customize and suddenly dinner is also part of the party.

For our movie night, we leaned into the concession-stand idea and used a real popcorn machine with toppings to choose from like butter, cheese, Parmesan, and more.

11. Have a Glow Party

Turn down the lights and add glow sticks, LED lights or black lights.

Add music and you can completely change a basement, garage or backyard without decorating every available surface.

12. Set Up a Backyard Tournament

Cornhole, volleyball, soccer, basketball, giant games or whatever you already own.

You can make teams and keep score or simply put everything out and see what gets played.

Sometimes the best party supplies are already sitting in the garage.

13. Keep Charades or Trivia Ready

I like having a couple of games ready even if we never get to them.

Make the categories about music, movies, celebrities, current obsessions or the birthday kid.

If you need them, great. If everyone is already having fun, leave them in the drawer.

14. Give Party Favors They’ll Actually Use

For our outdoor movie party, I gave everyone a blanket they could use that night and then take home. The girls got to choose pins to add to their blankets so we would know who's was who's.

I loved that the favors became part of the party instead of another bag of stuff to hand out at the end.

15. Pick One Big Thing. Then Stop.

This may be the biggest thing I’ve learned.

You don’t need 15 activities at one party just because I put 15 ideas in this article.

Pick one or two things that make the night feel special. Add food, music and somewhere comfortable to hang out.

Then let the party be a party.
